  20. The Network Fax Working Group is chartered to explore issues
  21. involved with the transmission and receipt of facsimilies across TCP/IP
  22. networks and to develop recommended standards for facsimile
  23. transmission across the Internet.  The Group is also intended to serve
  24. as a coordinating forum for people doing experimentation in this area
  25. to attempt to maximize the possibility for interoperability among
  26. network fax projects.
  27.  
  28. Among the issues that need to be resolved are what actual
  29. protocol(s) will be used to do the actual data transmission
  30. between hosts, architectural models for the integration of fax
  31. machines into the existing internet, what types of data encoding
  32. should be supported, how IP host address to phone number conversion
  33. should be done and associated issues of routing, and development of a
  34. gateway system that will allow existing Group 3 and Group 4 fax
  35. machines to operate in a network environment.

  37. It is expected that the output of the Working Group will be one
  38. or more RFC's documenting recommended solutions to the above questions
  39. and possibly also describing some actual implementations.  The life of
  40. the Working Group is expected to be 18-24 months.

  42. It is also hoped that some fax vendors, as well as the
  43. networking community and fax gateway developers, will be brought into
  44. the effort.

  48. Goals and Milestones: 
  49.  
  50.      Done Review  and  approve Charter  making  any  changes deemed necessary. 
  51.           Refine definition of scope of  work  to  be  accomplished  and       
  52.           initial set of RFC's to be developed.  Begin working on              
  53.           framework for solution.

  55.      Done Continue work  on  definition  of issues  and protocols.             
  56.           Work to be conducted on mailing  list.                               
  57.  
  58.      Done First  draft  of  RFC  to be completed.  To be discussed at IETF     
  59.           meeting and revised as necessary.

  61.      Done Continue revisions based  on comments   received   and   submit      
  62.           to  IESG  for  publication as RFC.

  64.    Mar 92 Overlapping  with  activities listed above may be implementations 
  65.           based on ideas  and  work  done  by the Working Group.  If so revise 
  66.           RFC to include knowledge gained from such implementations.
